Overview

I was honoured to participate in the Inaugural Meeting of the Hepbridge Scientific Advisory Committee, held in Johannesburg on 10 October 2025, in my capacity as Chairperson.

The Advisory Committee stands as a cornerstone for scientific excellence, evidence-based decision-making, and strategic guidance in advancing the vision of a hepatitis-free Africa—by eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. This commitment is fully aligned with global health goals and the African Union’s Triple Elimination Agenda to end mother-to-child transmission of HIV, hepatitis B, and syphilis.

The Hepbridge Scientific Advisory Committee serves as a bridge to action, supporting countries and communities in:

  1. Prioritizing and implementing national elimination plans for the screening and treatment of hepatitis B and C.
  2. Strengthening policies and programmes built on the pillars of Vaccinate, Prevent, Screen, and Treat.
  3. Enhancing the education and capacity of healthcare workers, ensuring knowledge and skills reach all levels of care.
  4. Simplifying the management of chronic viral hepatitis, integrating services into primary health care and supporting community-based initiatives to reach populations without access to centralized, tertiary health systems.

Congratulations to Professor Chris Kassianides, his team and the Gastroenterology and Hepatology Association of sub-Saharan Africa (GHASSA) for the well organised meeting.
